Bryn Mawr College Community Garden
Interviewee: Frankie Leech, Garden Coordinator
Q: Tell me about the objectives and mission of your organization.
A: The Bryn Mawr College Community Garden is a club at Bryn Mawr College. It was founded in 2010 by the Greens group on campus. We strive to provide local, organic produce made by and for the Bryn Mawr Community, with the goal of establishing productive outdoor spaces to enhance community building through active and engaging gardening ventures on and off campus.
Q: What is your role in meeting those objectives? (Describe your position)
A: I am one of two student garden coordinators and have several responsibilities. We reach to the community to gather volunteers for our weekly harvest each week. We try to maintain a strong community within our volunteer base. We physically maintain the garden (weeding, organize harvests, waterings, organize seedlings in the spring). We facilitate the distribution of the produce to the dining halls each week. We update our FB page with pictures and information to promote the garden and garden-related activities to the campus community.
Q: In what ways does the organization participate in corporate social responsibility?
A: I think our club has a good affect on the environment by bringing local food straight to our dining hall. We promote local, sustainable means of buying food. Our college is currently assessing what we food we buy, where is comes from (miles from the college) and how we can buy more local food in a cost effective way.
Q: Does the organization work with youth or outreach? If yes, in what ways and what kind of feedback do you receive?
A: Yes we have some youth outreach. We went to the ACPPA Community Art Center on the West End of Norristown and painted a fruit mural. We hope to expand our outreach by partnering with the Urban Edible Forrest Farm in Norristown.
Q: How does the organization utilize social media?
A: We use Facebook to share pictures and updates as well as promote garden activities.
Q: Are there future plans for expansion or new projects? If yes, how so.
A: No, as college students it is difficult to expand our activities. We have to be realistic with the time we have. So we try to limit our activities to ones we know we can do a good job on and are able to balance with school work.
Q: Where does the bulk of your funding come from?
A: The Student Governance Association at Bryn Mawr College
Q: What major events, symposiums, and/or conferences does the organization host or sponsor?
A: None
Q: How does the organization advertise and market these events? Which methods seem most effective?
A: N/A
