The Nature Conservancy
Interviewee: Shawneece Hennighan, Diversity Recruiting Specialist
Q: Tell me about the objectives and mission of your organization
A: It's rather simple, we raise awareness and work to "conserve lands and waters on which all life depends". We strive to be inclusive of all environmental aspects. Although our efforts are decentralized, the objective of The Nature Conservancy is to focus on land, people, and water, their connections, and how to protect them.
Q: What is your role in meeting those objectives? (Describe your position)
A: As the Diversity Recruiting Specialist, I work in Youth Services with Diversity and Inclusion Recruitment. This involves going to other communities and countries to boost our global workforce. I do a lot of work with youth, opening their eyes to careers in the environmental field, as well as connecting them to volunteer and employment opportunities. At TNC we realize the importance and value of diversity, and my role with the organization is to encourage people to join us in fulfilling our mission. Soon I will be moving into a new position as the Youth Services Coordinator where I will engage high school and college students in the field of environmental conservation, be it in the field or an office. My focus will be connecting interested persons to the proper place!
Q: In what ways does the organization participate in corporate social responsibility?
A: From the nonprofit side we participate in CSR daily. We connect with (200) schools and youth to raise awareness and encourage socially responsible and ecologically-friendly lifestyles. We keep society informed of the latest news in environmental topics. It is important to us to demonstrate CSR internally and externally, as a business and to society, so we are sure to practice what we preach.
Q: Does the organization work with youth or outreach? If yes, in what ways and what kind of feedback do you receive?
A: Yes! We have two elementary programs: Nature Works Everywhere and Nature Rocks. These programs get children involved with the environment and conservation. The LEAF Program exposes high school students to the possible careers in the environmental sector. Similarly, the GLOBE Program helps college students navigate the environmental sector and locate opportunities to serve in the field or an office. Most importantly, we offer employment positions to help bridge the gap to "entry level positions". We receive great feedback by way of testimonials, returning volunteers, and donors. Many participants rave about their exciting and informative experience with TNC.
Q: How does the organization utilize social media?
A: Everyday! Largely! We are present on almost every social media site, popular and unpopular. TNC has a social administration group which consists of an employee in each state who is responsible for sending information out on various social networks. We are so involved on social media that we recently ranked number six in environmental organizations with the most Likes on Facebook; making the list of the 50 most Liked organization's pages on Facebook.
Sites used in addition to Facebook: Twitter, WeChat, Instagram, Google+, Flikr, LinkedIn, and YouTube
Q: Are there future plans for expansion or new projects? If yes, how so.
A: There is always a future project! As an environmental organization we try to stay ahead of the game, so there is always a plan to expand and cover new areas. Climate Change and Marine & Fresh Water are our biggest focus in the Delaware area. Most expansion happens at the state level where issues change by region.
Q: Where does the bulk of your funding come from?
A: The majority of our funding comes from donors, membership, federal and state grants, partnerships, and state Board of Trustees.
Q:What major events, symposiums, and/or conferences does the organization host or sponsor?
A: We partner with many other organizations to support events and conferences. TNC itself does not host external conferences. We host numerous events throughout the year which include: volunteering, TED talks, Twitter chats, and smaller events hosted by individual chapters.
Q: How does the organization advertise and market these events? Which methods seem most effective?
A: We advertise through social media, membership emails, print (depending on the event), and on our website at nature.org.
